"Slumdog Millionaire", the rags-to-riches movie that took the Oscars by storm, also produced two of the most influential words of the 2008 Hollywood awards season, a language monitoring group said on Thursday.
"Jai Ho!", Hindi for Let There be Victory and the title of the movie's Oscar-winning best song, and "Slumdog" -- the controversial term coined by the filmmakers for young slum-dwellers in Mumbai -- were named the top "HollyWords" of the year that closed with last Sunday's Oscars.
Jai Ho!
The Global Language Monitor, which uses an algorithm to track the frequency of words and phrases in the world's print and electronic media, said it was rare for two words from the same movie to be ranked in its annual list.
"Slumdog Millionaire" crowned its awards sweep by winning eight Oscars, also including best picture and director.
Last summer's "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" inspired the new expression "Nuke the Fridge" -- a phrase coined on the Internet to describe a moment when a cinematic franchise has run its course.
The phrase came in third on the list, followed by "Hmong" -- a mountain dwelling people in Laos -- from the Clint Eastwood movie "Gran Torino".
"What doesn't kill you makes you….stranger", the Joker's twist on German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's epigram that was spoken by Heath Ledger in Batman blockbuster "The Dark Knight" was also among the Top Ten. Along with the line "There are no coincidences" from the animated movie "Kung Fu Panda."

As many professionals have learned the hard way, first impressions often last. That's why it's critical to put your best foot forward during the first few weeks at a new job. Following are some common (but potentially career-limiting) mistakes that new hires make -- along with tips on how to avoid them:

* Trying to do too much,翻譯.
While you want to contribute early on, pace yourself. You won't make a positive impact if you start stretching yourself too thin right out of the gate. Rather than putting undue pressure on yourself to overachieve, focus on getting a firm handle on your primary responsibilities, building rapport with colleagues, and identifying potential mentors.
* Being a know-it-all.
You were hired for a reason, so give your opinion when asked. After all, employers typically expect team members (especially new ones) to offer fresh ideas and solutions. But just as you don't want to be a shrinking violet who is fearful of sharing thoughts, you don't want to be labeled as disruptive either. Play it safe by being tactful and constructive with any feedback or criticism. Moreover, keep an open mind and steer clear of the always-annoying phrase,日譯中, "At my last job...?"

* Failing to make friends.
Everyone knows that it's wise to be friendly and personable when in the company of the boss. But it's not just the higher-ups you need to impress. Build relationships with all colleagues. After all, you may need to call on some of them for assistance in the future. Plus, there's no better way to ensure you'll receive a helping hand when faced with a challenge than by building bridges early on.

Shangrila (Xanadu)
Feng Shui
Casino
Cumshaw

Welcome to the coldest village on Earth where the temperature can hit -71.2C
If you thought it was cold where you are at the moment then a visit to the Russian village of Oymyakon might just change your mind.
With the average temperature for January standing at -50C, it is no wonder the village is the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world. Known as the 'Pole of Cold', the coldest ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2C.
This is the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth and the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.
Ironically, Oymyakon actually means 'non-freezing water' due to a nearby hot spring. Most homes in Oymyakon still burn coal and wood for heat and enjoy few modern conveniences.
Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer meat and horsemeat. A single shop provides the town's bare necessities and the locals work as reindeer-breeders, hunters and ice-fisherman.
Doctors say the reason the locals don't suffer from malnutrition is that their animals' milk contains a lot of micronutrients.
Unsurprisingly, locals are hardened to the weather and unlike in other countries - where a flurry of snow brings things grinding to a halt, Oymyakon's solitary school only shuts if temperatures fall below -52C.
There are few modern conveniences in the village - with many buildings still having outdoor toilets - and most people still burn coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular the power station starts burning wood. If the power ceases, the town shuts down in about five hours, and the pipes freeze and crack.

Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days. The earth must first have thawed sufficiently in order to dig it, so a bonfire is lit for a couple of hours. Hot coals are then pushed to the side and a hole couple of inches deep is dug. The process is repeated for several days until the hole is deep enough to bury the coffin.

Shayne Ward: Until You
Baby life was good to me
But you just made it better
I love the way you stand by me
Through any kind of weather
I don't wanna run away
Just wanna make your day
When you feel the world is on your shoulders
Don't wanna make it worse
Just wanna make us work
Baby tell me I will do whatever
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby nobody, nobody, until you
Baby it just took one hit of you
Now I'm addicted
You never know what's missing
Till you get everything you need, yeah
I don't wanna run away
Just wanna make your day
When you feel the world is on your shoulders
Don't wanna make it worse
Just wanna make us work
Baby tell me I will do whatever
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby nobody, nobody, until you
See it was enough to know
If I ever let you go
I would be no one
Cause I never thought I'd feel all the things you made me feel
Wasn't looking for someone until you
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
It feels like nobody ever knew me until you knew me
Feels like nobody ever loved me until you loved me
Feels like nobody ever touched me until you touched me
Baby nobody, nobody, until you

Lesson 014 - pig out bigmouth
L: Michael,
M: It was good to be with my family, but I was disappointed that you couldn't be there.
M: Ok, well. It was a great meal, we all pigged out.
M: Yeah, most people do have turkey. Pig out means to eat a large amount of food, not that we actually ate pig.
M: Yes, pigs eat a lot and that's where the expression pig out comes from. I did eat like a pig on Thanksgiving.
M: Um, I certainly did.
M: No, not really. But don't forget that when you use it in the past tense, pig out should be pigged out.
M: You will pig out during the Christmas holidays.
M: Yes, it's free. My friend Josh said he would be coming to ice-skate with his girlfriend Emily today. Oh, By the way, Li Hua, did you tell Simon that Josh and Emily are getting married soon? I just need...
M: Geez, Li Hua, you have such a bigmouth!
M: No, I'm saying you talk a lot about other people's business!
M: That makes you a bigmouth.
M: Yes, it is usually used in informal speech.
M: Well, don't worry about it. I tend to pig out and you're a bigmouth. Everyone has their faults.
M: Just don't be a person who eats like a pig and also is a bigmouth.

What are you doing all dolled up!
Jessica: Oh wow, sounds like you guys go way back!
My best friend!
Jessica: Actually in English, you can call her your BFF. BFF stands for Best Friend Forever. People use this term to refer to their best friends.
Yes, she's definitely my BFF! We were college classmates and lived in the same dorm for four years.
Jessica: You can say: we are tight! Tight
She's super competitive. She always wants what I have! Partial BFF? Partial tight?
Jessica: 哈哈.... that sounds like a frenemy of yours. Frenemy consists of friend and enemy, it is basically half friend and half enemy!
This girl is a frenemy.
Jessica: Sounds like a love-hate relationship to me!
YM: That's so true,
Before you go, tell me what you've learned today!
第兩,坤係很鐵能夠用 tight;
第三,亦敵亦友,叫做frenemy;

I’ve recently got a new boss who differs from the old one in what he wears. He has abandoned suits in favour of linen jackets and khaki trousers and no tie. My team mates have stopped wearing ties as well and are in chinos and open-necked shirts. I object to this as:
a) they look terrible; b) they are guilty of brown-nosing; and c) my suits are expensive and I like wearing them. So far I am sticking to my guns, but increasingly I feel that I stick out from the others. Does this matter?
1)他們看上往很蹩腳;
2)他們犯了阿谀奉承的弊端;
LUCY’S ANSWER
Yes, it does matter. All offices have uniforms, just as all schools do. In some schools the uniform is so strict that you get a detention if your tie knot is too loose. In others there is no stated uniform but every pupil knows that the dress stakes are high: they are judged not just by their brand of sweatpants but by precisely how low-slung they are.
Your old boss wisely insisted on a strict uniform, which was easy as everyone knew what to wear and, as long as their suits weren’t too ill-fitting, everyone could look relatively nice. Your new boss has swept away the old code by breaking it himself. But that doesn’t mean he has eliminated rules. There are rules, only they are harder to read.
Your colleagues have decided to take no risks in simply dressing like him. I can quite believe they look horrible - "business casual" is a hideous phrase for a hideous look. But I don’t agree that they are sucking up. They are just belonging, which is what success in offices is all about.
Your boss won’t be looking at their chinos and thinking: great trousers, great chap, I want to promote him. Instead he won’t be thinking about their chinos at all, which is what one wants. If, by contrast, you continue in the old uniform, your suits become a statement. They say that you are conservative, formal and a stickler.
Possibly this is your image, and it works for you. If you can make a virtue of difference, stick with it. Otherwise I would go out and buy the nicest smart casual clothes you can find.
Keep your suits, though. I predict that the pendulum is about to swing back. In fact this new boss of yours is a couple of seasons behind the fashion. I bet the next boss will bring back strict uniform as the first thing he does.

In some foreigners eyes', the learning of Chinese has become the most difficult thing for them. The tones of Chinese and Chinese characters all seem to be a difficulty. Then what has made the learning of Chinese difficult?
Top 1 Because the writing system is ridiculous
The beauty of the characters is indisputable, but these ideograms weren't too practical for daily use. It is absolutely true that Chinese is hard because of the huge number of characters one has to learn. And Chinese is not very phonetic, which means that often you just completely forget how to write a character, if there is no obvious semantic clue in the radical, and no helpful phonetic component somewhere in the character。
Top 2 Because the language doesn't have the common sense to use an alphabet
The English is so easy because of the skills needed to master the writing system are 26 letters and they are written from left to right ,horizontally, across the page, with spaces to indicate word boundaries. In comparison, Chinese has nothing that corresponds to an alphabet, though there are recurring components that make up the characters. It can be said that the components of Chinese characters are arrayed in two dimensions, rather than in the neat one-dimensional rows of alphabetic writing。
Top 3 Because even looking up a word in the dictionary is complicated
One of the most unreasonably difficult things about learning Chinese is that merely learning how to look up a word in the dictionary is about the equivalent of an entire semester of secretarial school. Chinese must also be one of the most dictionary-intensive languages on earth for there are various dictionaries。
Top 4 Because there's classical Chinese (wenyanwen)
Whereas modern Mandarin is merely perversely hard, classical Chinese is deliberately impossible. Classical Chinese really consists of tens of centuries of esoteric anecdotes and in-jokes written in a kind of terse, miserly code for dissemination among a small, elite group of intellectually-inbred bookworms who already knew the whole literature backwards and forwards。
Top 5 Because there are too many romanization methods and they all suck
Perhaps that's too harsh, but it is true that there are too many of them, and most of them were designed either by committee or by linguists, or -- even worse -- by a committee of linguists. It is, of course, a very tricky task to devise a romanization method; some are better than others, but all involve plenty of counterintuitive spellings。
Top 6 Because tonal languages are weird
It's one of the most common complaints about learning Chinese, and it's also one of the aspects of the language that westerners are notoriously bad at. As non-native speakers, you must memorize along with the vowels and consonants. The real difficulty comes in when you start to really use Chinese to express yourself. Intonation and stress habits are incredibly ingrained and second-nature。
Top 7 Because there is culture difference
One of the main reasons Chinese is so difficult for westerners is that the culture between the East and the West has been isolated for so long. China has had extensive contact with the West in the last few decades, but there is still a vast sea of knowledge and ideas that is not shared by both cultures. When westerners and Chinese get together, there is often not just a language barrier, but an immense cultural barrier as well。

英文4月April便由拉丁文April(即開花的日子)演變而來。

“N(for No)商场 if the statement contradicts the given in the passage;”
“NG(for Not Given)翻if the is not given in the passage.”

Codswallop 廢話
假如告訴你,codswallop源於一個叫Codd(攷特)的人死產的wallop(一種啤酒飲料),即codswallop=Codd's wallop(攷特的啤酒),您是不是有興趣猜一猜codswallop跟這酒飲料的聯係呢?
隨著時間的推移,codswallop現在能够指rubbish(廢話),nonsense(胡行亂語),worthlessness(毫無價值)。 I wish that my words were not codswallop but a helpful friend on your road to knowledge!

I took a seat at the end of the hearthstone opposite that towards which my landlord advanced, and filled up an interval of silence by attempting to caress the canine mother, who had left her nursery, and was sneaking wolfishly to the back of my legs, her lip curled up, and her white teeth watering for a snatch.
My caress provoked a long, guttural gnarl.
'You'd better let the dog alone,' growled Mr. Heathcliff in unison, checking fiercer demonstrations with a punch of his foot. '
“She's not accustomed to be spoiled - not kept for a pet.' Then, striding to a side door, he shouted again, 'Joseph!'
Joseph mumbled indistinctly in the depths of the cellar, but gave no intimation of ascending; so his master dived down to him, leaving me VIS-A-VIS the ruffianly bitch and a pair of grim shaggy sheep-dogs, who shared with her a jealous guardianship over all my movements.
Not anxious to e in contact with their fangs, I sat still; but, imagining they would scarcely understand tacit insults, I unfortunately indulged in winking and making faces at the trio, and some turn of my physiognomy so irritated madam, that she suddenly broke into a fury and leapt on my knees. I flung her back, and hastened to interpose the table between us. This proceeding aroused the whole hive: half-a-dozen four-footed fiends, of various sizes and ages, issued from hidden dens to the mon centre. I felt my heels and coat-laps peculiar subjects of assault; and parrying off the larger batants as effectually as I could with the poker, I was constrained to demand, aloud, assistance from some of the household in re-establishing peace.
Mr. Heathcliff and his man climbed the cellar steps with vexatious phlegm: I don't think they moved one second faster than usual, though the hearth was an absolute tempest of worrying and yelping. Happily, an inhabitant of the kitchen made more des: a lusty dame, with tucked-up gown, bare arms, and fire-flushed cheeks, rushed into the midst of us flourishing a frying-pan: and used that weapon, and her tongue, to such purpose, that the storm subsided magically, and she only remained, heaving like a sea after a high wind, when her master entered on the scene.
'What the devil is the matter?' he asked, eyeing me in a manner that I could ill endure after this inhospitable treatment.
'What the devil, indeed!' I muttered. 'The herd of possessed swine could have had no worse spirits in them than those animals of yours, sir. You might as well leave a stranger with a brood of tigers!'
'They won't meddle with persons who touch nothing,' he remarked, putting the bottle before me, and restoring the displaced table. 'The dogs do right to be vigilant. Take a glass of wine?'
'No, thank you.'
'Not bitten, are you?'
'If I had been, I would have set my signet on the biter.'
Heathcliff's countenance relaxed into a grin.
'e, e,' he said, 'you are flurried, Mr. Lockwood. Here, take a little wine. Guests are so exceedingly rare in this house that I and my dogs, I am willing to own, hardly know how to receive them. Your health, sir?'
I bowed and returned the pledge; beginning to perceive that it would be foolish to sit sulking for the misbehaviour of a pack of curs; besides, I felt loth to yield the fellow further amusement at my expense; since his humour took that turn.
He - probably swayed by prudential consideration of the folly of offending a good tenant - relaxed a little in the laconic style of chipping off his pronouns and auxiliary verbs, and introduced what he supposed would be a subject of interest to me, - a discourse on the advantages and disadvantages of my present place of retirement.
I found him very intelligent on the topics we touched; and before I went home, I was encouraged so far as to volunteer another visit to-morrow.
He evidently wished no repetition of my intrusion. I shall go, notwithstanding. It is astonishing how sociable I feel myself pared with him.

President Bush Discusses Stem Cell Veto and Executive Order -
June 20, 20
2:39 P.M. EDT
THE PRESIDENT: Wele. I'm glad you're here. America is a nation that leads the world in science and technology. Our innovative spirit is making possible incredible advances in medicine that could save lives and cure diseases. America is also a nation founded on the principle that all human life is sacred -- and our conscience calls us to pursue the possibilities of science in a manner that respects human dignity and upholds our moral values.
I appreciate the fact that we're joined by a lot of folks who share the deep desire to advance science, and at the same time, uphold our moral values. I appreciate the fact that Mike Leavitt is here, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. I want to thank the members of the United States Congress and Senate who have joined us. I thank you for taking your time to be here on this important announcement today.
I'm joined on stage by two good docs, really smart, capable people: Dr. Bill Hurlbut, Professor of Stanford University Medical Center; Dr. Don Landry, Professor at Columbia University Department of Medicine -- actually, he's the Chairman of the Department. The reason they're here is these are brilliant biologists who are seeking new ways to develop stem cell lines without violating human life,翻譯社. And these are smart folks, and I cannot thank them enough for ing to the Oval Office to share with me their wisdom and their vision.
I'm also up here with Carol Franz; she has whipped cancer twice by using adult stem cells. In other words, adult stem cells have saved her life. She's a determined woman who believes strongly that there are different alternatives available to use stem cells other than those which are created as the result of destruction of human life.
And, finally, I'm up here with the McNamara family -- Kaitlyne is with us -- I'm going to talk about her in a second.
I do want to thank the other stem cell patients and researchers and advocates who are here with us today. If you're not in any of those categories you're wele, too. (Laughter.)
In 2001, I announced a policy to advance stem cell research in a way that is ambitious, ethical, and effective. I became the first President to make federal funds available for embryonic stem cell research -- and my policy did this in ways that would not encourage the destruction of embryos. Since then, my administration has made more than $130 million available for research on stem cell lines derived from embryos that had already been destroyed. We've provided more than $3 billion for research on all forms of stem cells -- including those from adult and other non-embryonic sources.
This careful approach is producing results. It has contributed to proven therapeutic treatments in thousands of patients with many different diseases. It's opening the prospect of new discoveries that could transform lives.
Congress has sent me a bill that would overturn this policy. If this legislation became law, it would pel American taxpayers -- for the first time in our history -- to support the deliberate destruction of human embryos. I made it clear to Congress and to the American people that I will not allow our nation to cross this moral line. Last year, Congress passed a similar bill -- I kept my promise by vetoing it. And today I'm keeping my word again: I am vetoing the bill that Congress has sent. (Applause.)
Destroying human life in the hopes of saving human life is not ethical -- and it is not the only option before us. We're already seeing remarkable advances in the science and therapeutic uses of stem cells drawn from adults and children, and the blood from umbilical cords -- with no harm to the donor. Researchers value embryonic stem cells because they are pluripotent -- which means that they have the potential to develop into nearly all the cell types and tissues in the body. Researchers are now developing promising new techniques that offer the potential to produce pluripotent stem cells -- without having to destroy human life.
For example, several new studies released earlier this month showed the potential of reprogramming adult cells -- such as skin cells -- to make them function like embryonic stem cells. It's exciting new research taking place in the United States of America. Scientists from all over the country hailed this as an important breakthrough. And I'm pleased to report to you that my administration and the NIH helped fund this exciting work. The taxpayers' dollars are going to new kinds of therapies, new kinds of science, new kinds of work that do not cross a moral and ethical line.
A few months earlier, scientists discovered that cells extracted from amniotic fluid and placentas could also provide stem cells that seem to do what embryonic cells can. Still other researchers are investigating how to bine reprogramming and other innovative techniques to produce stem cells with the abilities of embryonic stem cells -- without creating or destroying embryos. There's a lot of interesting work going on that's ethical and moral. Scientists are exploring ways to collect stem cells in the same manner that doctors now rescue organs from patients who have died.
With us today are patients who are benefiting from ethical stem cell research -- including Kaitlyne McNamara. Kaitlyne was born with spina bifida, a disease that damaged her bladder. None of the treatments her doctor tried had worked; she was in danger of kidney failure. Then her doctors took a piece of her bladder, isolated the healthy stem cells, and used them to grow a new bladder in a laboratory -- which they then transplanted into her. And here she stands, healthy. (Applause.) Scientific advances like this one are important and should give us hope that there's a better way forward than scientific advances that require the destruction of a human life.
The researchers pursuing these kinds of ethically responsible advances deserve our support, and there is legislation in Congress to give them that support. Recently, the United States Senate passed a bill sponsored by Norm Coleman and others that would authorize additional federal funding for alternative stem cell research. The bill was approved with the backing of 70 United States senators. The House leaders need to pass similar legislation that would authorize additional funds for ethical stem cell research. That would be an important advancement. It would be an important statement. Because we can't lose the opportunity to conduct research that would give hope to those suffering from terrible diseases -- and help this country move beyond the controversies over embryo destruction.
We have a good chance to put aside all the politics and focus on a good piece of legislation that advances science and doesn't cross an ethical line. Norm, I want to thank you and Johnny Isakson for sponsoring that piece of legislation. (Applause.)
In the meantime, my administration is taking immediate action to increase our support for researchers in their vital work. Earlier today, I issued an executive order to strengthen our nation's mitment to research on pluripotent stem cells. This order takes a number of important steps. The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services and the NIH to ensure that any human pluripotent stem cell lines produced in ways that do not create, destroy, or harm human embryos will be eligible for federal funding.
The order expands the NIH Embryonic Stem Cell registry to include all types of ethically produced human pluripotent stem cells. The order renames the registry -- calls it this, the Pluripotent Stem Cell Registry -- so it reflects what stem cells can do, instead of where they e from. The order invites scientists to work with the NIH, so we can add new ethically derived stem cell lines to the list of those eligible for federal funding. I direct Secretary Leavitt to conduct an assessment of what resources will be necessary to support this important new research.
This science which does not cross ethical lines requires money. I believe it is a good use of taxpayers' money to spend money on this kind of science and research. And Michael is going to expedite it, that's what that means -- it's a fancy paragraph for saying he's going to get it done. (Laughter.)
With these steps, we'll encourage scientists to expand the frontiers of stem cell research. We want to encourage science. We want to say, we stand on your side in an ethically responsible way. Scientists have recently shown they have the ingenuity and skill to pursue the potential benefits of pluripotent stem cell research. Here's two of them right here. That's why they're standing here, they have showed what's possible. I have confidence in their abilities to continue to develop new techniques. With our expanded support of non-destructive research methods, we'll make it more likely that these exciting advances continue to unfold.
Technical innovation in this difficult area is opening up new possibilities for progress without conflict or ethical controversy. So I invite policymakers and scientists to e together to speed our nation toward the destination we all seek -- where medical problems can be solved without promising either the high aims of science or the sanctity of human life.
Thank you all for ing. May God bless. (Applause.)

For wars e and go, but our soldiers they stay eternal!

Buckle up指的是把平安帶係好,還能够說fasten the seatbelt. 記得我曾看過一個公益廣告,差人出來說:“If you don’t buckle up, you’d better listen up.”
2. Put your children in back!
3. Never drunk drive!
4. You always have to stop at a stop sign.
Stop sign,
5. In a crosswalk, pedestrians have the right of way.

As with almost all "Christian" holidays, Easter has been secularized and mercialized. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication。
The History of Easter
Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival。
The ancient Saxons d the return of spring with an uproarious festival memorating their goddess of offspring and of springtime, Eastre. When the second-century Christian missionaries encountered the tribes of the north with their pagan celebrations, they attempted to convert them to Christianity. They did so, however, in a clandestine manner。
It would have been suicide for the very early Christian converts to their holy days with observances that did not coincide with celebrations that already existed. To save lives, the missionaries cleverly decided to spread their religious message slowly throughout the populations by allowing them to continue to pagan feasts, but to do so in a Christian manner。
As it happened, the pagan festival of Eastre occurred at the same time of year as the Christian observance of the Resurrection of Christ. It made sense, therefore, to alter the festival itself, to make it a Christian celebration as converts were slowly won over. The early name, Eastre, was eventually changed to its modern spelling,中譯日, Easter。

Mid Autumn Festival Stories -
Chang'e and Hou Yi
Long long ago, there were 10 suns in the sky. They burnt all the plants on the earth. People were dying.
One day, a hero whose name was Hou Yi used his bow and arrows to shoot down nine of them. All the people on the earth were saved.
One day, the queen of heaven gave Hou Yi a bottle elixir that could make Hou Yi bee an immortal, but the elixir was only efficacious for one person. Hou Yi did want to bee an immortal, but he wanted to stay with his beautiful wife Chang'e more, so he didn't drink the elixir and asked his wife Chang'e to keep it for him.
Hou Yi was being more and more famous after he shot down the nine suns and more and more men wanted Hou Yi to be their master. Most of them were accepted by Hou Yi.
Not every student of Hou Yi had good morality. Feng Meng, one of his students, wanted to seize his elixir. One day, Hou Yi went hunting with his students, but Feng Meng pretended to be ill and stay at home. When making sure Hou Yi had gone he went to Hou Yi's house and tried to force Chang'e to give him the elixir. Chang'e knew she couldn't defeat Feng Meng so she drank the elixir immediately. The elixir made her bee an immortal and fly higher and higher. Finally, she stopped on the moon.
From then on, people often pray to Chang'e for fortune and safety. During the Mid-Autumn Festival they offer lots of foods to Chang'e.
Wu Gang and the Cherry Bay
Wu Gang was a woodchopper. He always wanted to bee an immortal, but he never tried his best to learn the necessary theurgy. The Jade Emperor got angry with him because of his attitude. In order to punish him, the Jade Emperor planted a huge cherry bay, which was 1665 meters (5460 ft) high, on the moon and ordered Wu Gang to chop it down, then Wu Gang could bee an immortal.
This time, Wu Gang was very serious, but he could never finish his work. The cherry bay healed every time that Wu Gang chopped it. Wu Gang wouldn't give up,翻译资讯. He tried time and time again.
On unclouded nights people can see some obvious shadows on the moon. They are made by the huge cherry bay.
The Jade Rabbit
One day, three immortals who were living in heaven came to the earth. They asked a fox, a monkey and a rabbit to find some food for them respectively. The fox and the monkey both found something for the three immortals while the rabbit got nothing. The rabbit felt very sorry for the three immortals. Finally, he jumped into the fire and said to the three immortals, "Eat me, please!" The three immortal were deeply moved by the rabbit. They decided to give the rabbit the title of "Jade Rabbit" and let him acpany Chang'e in the Moon Palace.

Secretary Clinton “We have to remain vigilant on behalf of women’s rights” -
Over at the State Department’s Dipnote blog, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Christopher R. Hill wraps up Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s trip to Asia discussing a town hall at Ewha University in Seoul. He describes the scene last week: "Thousands of students showed up -- despite the fact that they're on winter break -- to ask the Secretary everything from what her priorities were as Secretary of State to how she's managed to balance the demands of career and family."
The picture he posts is great:
Secretary Clinton gave an impassioned call to continue defending and advancing women’s rights around the world, condemning recent brutality in Afghanistan and elsewhere. During the Q&A session she had an interesting exchange about her role dealing with foreign leaders as a woman:
QUESTION: You spoke a lot about being a woman and how women are a necessity to the world right now,雅虎翻譯社. How has -- especially being a mother. How has it been dealing with other world leaders who aren’t as accepting of the role of women for example, in different countries who don’t really respect women? How has that been trying to get them to cooperate with you as a female yourself?
SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, I don’t feel like I’ve had any problems either as a senator or in my short tenure as Secretary of State, because I hold an official position and I represent the -- in the first case, the United States Senate, or in this case, as the representative of the United States. So there is a funny kind of difference that sometimes goes on in some countries that are not particularly supportive of women in official positions. I think they just kind of ignore the fact that they’re dealing with someone who’s a woman. That seems to be almost a change that goes on in their mind.
So I don’t have any problems with that, but I do believe that it’s important for someone in my position to raise the role of women on an ongoing basis, even in countries where women are not given full and equal rights. So I don’t think it’s enough that people deal with me; I want them to deal with their own women, I want them to think about giving all women the rights to be fully functioning, productive citizens. So that is part of the mission that I feel I carry as the Secretary of State of the United States, and that’s what I intend to promote as I travel around the world talking about a lot of these important matters that are really at the core of the kind of future we’re going to have for ourselves and our children. (Applause.)

Speech at the National Day Reception in Celebration of the 61st Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China
by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre
October 1, 2010
Distinguished guests and friends,
I am most delighted to the 61st Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China here with all of you.
In this first decade of the 21st century, we have witnessed the country's rapid economic development, rising national power and huge improvement in people's standard of living. These remarkable achievements have made China the focus of world attention.
As the Chief Executive of HKSAR, I have visited the Mainland on numerous occasions over these years. My colleagues and I have set foot in many places, spanning from the Northeastern region to Hainan, from the prosperous coastal provinces to the booming Central and Western regions. We see immense progress everywhere. Each and every visit to these places gives me new sensations and new insights.
Our country's rise to prosperity and power is not without difficulties. Over the past year, for example, the floods in various provinces, the massive mudslide in Gansu and the devastating earthquake in Qinghai caused heavy casualties, extensive destruction and severe financial losses. These are a testimony that on this vast piece of land, there are still many difficulties and challenges ahead that call for our united efforts to overe.
The Shanghai Expo this year has once again made our country the world spotlight. I know many people have visited this largest world expo ever during summer holidays and long holidays. For those who haven't, I hope they will do so in this last month of the Expo to feel its charm and excitement. Hong Kong will continue to fully engage in the event and present visitors with wonderful programmes. I am sure the "Hong Kong Week" from 18 to 22 October will be the climax of months of our participation in the Expo.
Ladies and gentlemen, we have seen the country's growing economic influence in the region and the world. This is a significant change in the global economic landscape in the post-financial crisis era. This phenomenon will continue to intensify with the country's increasing domestic demand, external trade and overseas investment. In this process, Hong Kong will leverage our strengths as an international financial hub to promote the regionalisation and internationalisation of Renminbi, to enhance our petitiveness and to accumulate experience for the financial opening-up and further economic development of the country.
Looking ahead, our country is set to accelerate the transformation of its economic development model and optimise its economic structure. With a mature and top-notch services sector, and unique advantages under "One Country, Two Systems", Hong Kong has much to contribute to the country's "12th Five-Year Plan". The drafting work of the Plan has now e to a critical stage. We will do all we can to contribute to the drafting of the Plan and give full play to our strengths to serve the needs of the country.
Distinguished guests and friends, we see a very promising future in our country. I hope all sectors of the munity can seize the opportunities to contribute more to the development of our country and Hong Kong. Now, please join me in a toast: To a brighter future for our country and for Hong Kong.

1.dude(老兄,老哥)
2.chick(女孩)
3.pissedoff(死氣,不下興)
4.Hey,Givemefive(嗨,好啊!)
5.freakout(大發脾氣)
例子:He’sgonnafreak(他将近發脾氣了)
6.Getoutofhere(別開打趣了,別騙人了)
例子:(Man:)Youlookverybeautiful(您很美丽)(Girl:)Getoutofhere.(別騙了)
7.gross(实惡古道热肠)
8.Hello(有沒有搞錯)
9.green(新手,沒有經)
10.Haveacrushonsomeone(愛上某人)

Press Briefing Highlights -
This afternoon, in his second press briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fielded questions on energy independence, the stimulus package, and the auto industry. Here are some selected responses from the press conference.
On the remaining bailout funds:
"I do think what is incredibly important for you and for the American people to understand is the President believes that -- and outlined this to Congress before they voted -- we have to use the second $350 billion far differently than we used the first $350 billion to address the foreclosure crisis, to do so in a way that's transparent, so the American people will know where the money is going. There was a report today in the Wall Street Journal that many of the banks that had gotten money are actually lending less now that they have that money. That clearly has to change. The point of that money was to go to banks to free up lending, free up credit, capital…. We're going to change the way that money works to ensure that money that is injected into banks is used to provide small businesses with loans, to provide families with college or auto loans. We have to do so in a way that's transparent. And we have to make sure that there's some change in executive pensation as it relates to entities that participate in that program or get the money."
On how today's memoranda regarding environmental policy might impact the nation's struggling auto industry:
"The particular action that the President took today was to take legislation that Congress approved in December of 20, and President Bush signed, and in January of 2009 implement changed CAFE standards for model year . So I don't think it es as any surprise to automakers or consumers that a change in our fuel mileage standards was on the horizon. In fact, between December of 20 and October of 2010 -- which is when manufacturers begin the next model year -- we believe, and I've seen testimony from the auto panies, that changing those fuel mileage standards is certainly doable. The President wants to work with the auto industry to ensure that the fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow are produced and built here in America for Americans to buy. And I think that government working with the auto industry can ensure that we have a sustainable path toward the production or more fuel-efficient autos, that those fuel-efficient autos will be more appealing to American consumers, and that that can be a win-win for both. The actions that the President took today put us on the path when we realize a fuel efficiency standard of 35 miles to the gallon -- it's 27.5 now -- 35 miles to the gallon will constitute a savings of 2 million barrels of oil a day, which is roughly parable to the amount of oil that we import each day from the Persian Gulf."
And later, in response to a similar question:
"I think what ultimately we'll e up with is something that moves along the twin goals of ensuring a strong manufacturing sector while at the same time ensuring that we take the necessary steps to reduce our dependence on foreign oil."
In response to the question, What is a green job, anyway?, Gibbs replied:
"Each year, at least at the end of last year, you had tax credits for wind energy jobs -- there's a one-year tax credit, right. And so the -- every year in August or September, there's a huge scurry to make sure that next year's tax credit is available. Well, if you're going to build a windmill [sector] the size of which is going to produce energy to lower the power costs of millions of Americans,翻譯, there's some lead time that's involved. So in instituting a renewed tax credit in this economic stimulus bill to give the producers of wind energy some understanding of what's available for them to use in creating these jobs and to give them some economic certainty is important. That's just one example….You've got biofuel jobs. You've got solar projects. I think there's any number of clean energy jobs that can drive not only our path towards energy independence, but also a path towards creating jobs."
There were also a lot of questions about the President's plans for bipartisanship. Gibbs said that President Obama will hear out Congressional Republicans in two meetings on Capitol Hill tomorrow -- first with the House GOP, then the Senate GOP.
"The President is very serious about this….[T]he job announcements today underscore the necessity that Washington not respond to the latest crisis simply by doing what Washington always does best and does more frequently, and that is get into too much of a back and forth and have important issues that the American people are concerned about bee a political football. That's why the President is willing and eager to go first to have Republican leaders and Democratic leaders here, and now to go talk only with Republican leaders tomorrow to seek their input. And we hope that this is a process that will continue until the bill goes through Congress and the President has something that he can sign.
"The goal is to seek their input. He wants to hear their ideas. If there are good ideas -- and I think he assumes there will be -- that we will look at those ideas; that those ideas will go through a process in Congress; they'll be debated and voted on….And I think because of that bipartisan dialogue we'll create a better economic plan for the American people when all is said and done."

chaperon 女伴
假如讀過小仲馬的《茶花女》,不知您是不是記得Marguerite(瑪格麗特)的女伴Prudence(普律噹絲),chaperon(女伴)一詞曾正在英文版的《茶花女》裏頻繁出現。
